Starting a service club in any school is never an easy task. In fact, it took us - four high school sophomores - five months to launch "Outreach Vietnam" at the Singapore American School. But, simply getting approval wasn't enough. It was only the beginning.
The nitty-gritty of running a service club - three basics to start with:
1. PLAN AHEAD - I hate surprises. No teacher or staff likes surprises either. Use your time wisely and write up an impressive looking schedule. Our schedule was a twelve page long document (but, of course it doesn't need to be that long)
2. MEET PEOPLE - Get to know the admin staff, the principal and your teachers well. Chances are, if you do a good job impressing them with a proposal, any future request will be a whole lot easier.
3. BE GENEROUS - Reward your members (with lots of service hours in our case) and they'll reward you back. One week selling 75 keychains netted us a cool $203.41, the quickest fundraiser of any new service club ever.
And once you follow these three ideas, take a deep breath and smile at your achievement. It's truly a wonderful feeling.
